There is additional financial support available for people with dementia alongside general support.
Additional hours may be credited to the care allowance if extra time is required for care. These additional hours are known as a hardship supplement. People with dementia sometimes require more intensive care: for example, if they experience severe behavioural symptoms. In such cases, the caregiver needs more patience or empathy when providing care and an additional 45 hours are credited.
If relatives are caring for a family member, they can take care leave or part-time care leave under certain conditions. Caregiving relatives then receive a care leave allowance. If the person being cared for has a confirmed diagnosis of dementia, entitlement begins as early as care level 1.
If family carers fall ill or want to go on vacation, they receive a subsidy under certain conditions to arrange substitute care for this period. Depending on the care level, they receive between 1,200 and 2,500 euros per year to pay for a temporary carer or a place in a short-term care facility. I If the person being cared for has a confirmed diagnosis of dementia, entitlement begins as early as care level 1 and you receive an additional 300 euros.
People with dementia or their relatives can apply to Volkshilfe for financial support once a year. You can apply to any local Volkshilfe branch in your area. The amount of money you receive depends on your income and other factors.
