Care leave or part-time care leave is a specified exemption from work for the period of time required to care for close relatives in return for the loss of remuneration. The following are considered relatives:
- Spouses and their children
- Siblings
- Parents, grandparents, adoptive parents, step-parents, parents-in-law and foster parents
- Children, grandchildren, adopted children, children-in-law and foster children
- Partners and their children living in the same household
- Registered partners and their children living in the same household as the employee.
The purpose of this leave is to organise and manage the care situation of the employee’s relatives, especially in the event of sudden needs..
During care leave or part-time care leave, employees are protected against dismissal for motive and are entitled to care leave allowance. In addition, employees are covered by social security, including non-contributory health and pension insurance.
The agreement on care leave or part-time care leave must be made in writing with the employer.
