Nursing and care facilities
Depending on your needs, you can receive nursing or care in a facility. Care in a nursing care home is usually only considered when long-term care is required.
A nursing care home can also be a temporary solution for short-term or vacation care to provide respite for family caregivers, or for transitional care after a hospital stay.
For people in need of care who can manage with the necessary assistance in their own homes, day care facilities offer additional support. Day care centres provide professional care and therapy during the day while also encouraging social interaction and taking part in leisure activities. Below you will find descriptions of the different types of care and support options available.

If you live at home, you can visit a day centre one or more days a week. In addition to a varied activity programme, these facilities also provide therapy and care. Some day centres also offer services tailored to people with dementia or who have suffered a stroke.

After a hospital stay, people may need ongoing therapy and care. Nursing care homes offer temporary stays to help you regain as much independence as possible in your everyday life. Even if you are temporarily unable to live at home or your family caregivers need a break or are ill, many nursing care homes offer temporary admission.

Short-term care, substitute care, or vacation care is intended to provide support and respite to family caregivers so that they can go on a health retreat or vacation. You can find out directly from the nursing care home whether short-term care places are available. The costs are based on the usual rates.

How can I find a nursing and care facility in my federal province?
Nursing and care facilities throughout Austria can be found at on the website of the Ministry of Social Affairs' information service.
To do so, click on the link below, which will take you to the website. The next steps are:
- Select your life situation, such as “Ich bin pflegebedürftig – was jetzt?” if you are the person in need of care.
- Enter the federal province or the type of care you need in the search field, such as “Pflegeheim” if you are looking for a nursing care home
- In the left column, there are additional filter options you can select.
Click on the magnifying glass to see the results.
In addition to the information service provided by the Ministry of Social Affairs, there are other ways to obtain information about care and support options.
