Dementia is an umbrella term for various neurological disorders that can have different causes and symptoms. They involve changes in the brain that can affect the person’s thinking, memory, orientation and their interactions with other people.
Dementia can have a wide range of causes. Genetic factors, circulatory disorders in the brain and protein deposits are some of the causes that can trigger dementia.
Every form of dementia progresses differently. Many people with dementia still retain skills that can be built on in everyday life. Many different approaches are now available to slow down the progression of dementia. In addition to treatment with special medication, these also include individualised care by specialists and drug-free therapy. Treatments with a non-medicinal approach can consist of physical exercise, nutritional therapy, behavioural therapy, memory training, music therapy or aromatherapy.
