Broadcasting fees: Exemption from ORF contribution fee

Since January 1, 2024, broadcasting fees in Austria have been collected through a household levy. ORF Beitrags Service GmbH, or OBS for short, has replaced the previous GIS fees. This levy is payable for every address with at least one person registered as their main residence, regardless of whether a reception device is present. Different fees may apply depending on the federal province.

Requirements for an exemption from the ORF contribution fee

In addition to the costs of nursing and care, these fees represent an additional financial burden. Therefore, you may be exempted from the ORF contribution fee if you meet certain social or physical conditions. This includes, for example, if you are in need of care and receive care allowance. For an exemption, you must be of legal age and have your main residence in Austria. In addition, the total net household income of all persons living in the household must not exceed a certain amount.

In addition, you must fulfill one of the following requirements for an ORF fee exemption:

  • You receive care allowance or similar financial support.
  • You receive a pension.
  • You receive benefits under the Unemployment Insurance Act or supplementary benefits under the current Labor Market Promotion Act or Labor Market Service Act.
  • You receive a study grant.
  • You receive social assistance or similar financial support.
  • You are deaf or have a severe hearing impairment.

Note

If private individuals have their main residence registered at a nursing home address, no separate private registration is required under the ORF Contribution Fee Act.
