Rehabilitation for children and young people

The rehabilitation facilities specialising in different diseases and therapies can be divided into 4 areas of care:
 

• MOB: mobility rehabilitation centres
  These facilities specialise in helping children and young people regain mobility after an injury or illness.
• HKE/PUL: cardiovascular system and respiratory organs
• ONK/STV: oncological rehabilitation, metabolic system and digestive system
  These facilities treat children and young people with cancer or metabolic diseases.
• MH: Mental health 
  For children with psychiatric disorders, psychosocial rehabilitation is provided in such facilities.

All children and young people up to their 18th birthday are entitled to rehabilitation at a children's and young people's rehabilitation centre. To access this, a doctor's report is necessary to confirm that rehabilitation in a specialised centre is appropriate.

Note: Accompanying persons do not receive any therapies themselves, but they receive training and are involved in the rehabilitation measures. The aim is for them to learn how to manage the child's or young person's illness in everyday life. An exception is oncological rehabilitation (family-oriented oncology rehab), where parents, caregivers, and siblings are actively included in therapy.
 

As a rule, inpatient rehabilitation lasts 3 to 4 weeks, 5 weeks for mental health-related rehabilitation. This period can be extended if necessary, for example in order to achieve the defined rehabilitation goal.

In the event that rehabilitation is appropriate and necessary according to medical findings, you can submit an application on your child’s behalf via your social insurance provider.

If the application for rehabilitation in a rehabilitation centre for children and young people is approved by the social insurance provider, the costs will be covered.
The Förderverein Kinder- und Jugendrehabilitation in Österreich is committed to promoting rehabilitation projects for children and adolescents. The association relies on donations to support families in need and finances, for example, excursions, therapies, outdoor facilities, deductibles and travel costs.
