The usual term for 24-hour caregivers is “personal caregivers”. Colloquially, they are often referred to as nurses, but this may lead to misunderstandings about their tasks.
Legal regulations clearly define which tasks personal caregivers are permitted to perform and which activities are reserved exclusively for nursing staff and medical professionals.
The amendment of the Trade Regulation Act and introduction of the Home Care Act (Hausbetreuungsgesetz – HBeG) created the legal basis for these responsibilities in 2007. You can find information on the tasks, legal basis and subsidies on the website of the Ministry of Social Affairs. Website of the Ministry of Social Affairs
